TN Embroidery Stitch Types

  • Straight Stitch – Very basic. Used in a line or in adjacent placements;
  • Chain Stitch – Known as the Tambour stitch. One of the oldest decorative stitches in use;
  • Split Stitch - Known as a Kensington stitch. Frequently used to outline other stitched areas or used as a fill-in-shading. Requires thread that can be split easily;
  • Buttonhole Stitch - Known as blanket stitches. The foundation for many other stitch types. Can prevent fabric edges from raveling;
  • Satin Stitch - Sometimes called Damask stitch. Several straight stitches placed close to each other to create a satin appearance;
  • Back Stitch - Often used in outlining;
  • Cross Stitch - X-shaped stitches;
  • Knotted Stitches - Leaves a knot above the fabric as a decorative accent.

What are the different embroidery styles?

·         Crewel – Uses wool thread and stitch types such as split, satin, and chain stitches. Designs are large and bold.
·         Cross Stitch - Precise placement of x-shaped stitches on fabric with a pre-printed picture on it, and has evenly spaced threads and stitch holes. Cotton floss is the used thread.
·         Needlepoint - Uses canvas with evenly placed stitch holes. Silk, cotton, wool, or wool blends are the different threads being used. May use only a couple of stitch types or a variety of them.
·         Needle Painting - Uses very closely placed, long and short stitches. This form is also called thread painting or silk shading. Also uses many colors.
·         Blackwork, Bluework, Redwork, and Whitework - Uses one color of thread on white or natural-colored fabric. Cross stitch and crewel are used.
·         Hardanger – Uses the same color of thread and fabric. Designs are usually geometric in form. Uses various stitch types including satin stitch and French knots.
