What exactly is silkscreen?
Silk screening
is a process or technique that is used to create a variety of prints on a wide
selection of different materials. Another term used when describing silk
screening is known as screen printing. Traditionally, silk was used in the
process prior to polyester mesh. Today, synthetic threads are commonly used in
the silk screening process. There are also a special mesh material of nylon and
stainless steel available to be used in the screen printing process. The
different mesh sizes will determine the outcome and the look of the finished
design on the material used. Now, the mesh is stretched tightly onto a frame to
silk screen. Then, a negative design is created on the screen using a variety
of techniques, and ink is rolled or sponged onto the screen. This is then
pressed onto the object being printed. Most printers use
a squeegee or a similar tool to gently press the ink onto the printed
product, before removing the screen and hanging the print up to dry.
