TN Embroidery Stitch Types

  • Straight Stitch – Very basic. Used in a line or in adjacent placements;
  • Chain Stitch – Known as the Tambour stitch. One of the oldest decorative stitches in use;
  • Split Stitch - Known as a Kensington stitch. Frequently used to outline other stitched areas or used as a fill-in-shading. Requires thread that can be split easily;
  • Buttonhole Stitch - Known as blanket stitches. The foundation for many other stitch types. Can prevent fabric edges from raveling;
  • Satin Stitch - Sometimes called Damask stitch. Several straight stitches placed close to each other to create a satin appearance;
  • Back Stitch - Often used in outlining;
  • Cross Stitch - X-shaped stitches;
  • Knotted Stitches - Leaves a knot above the fabric as a decorative accent.
